Demystifying Writing

transmet2We tend to mystify writing, along with the other arts. Because the end effect can be so magical, we want to treat the process of creation as magical too. It’s a mistake.

If you want to write, then the most powerful thing you can do, the most important thing you must do, is to demystify the process. Recognise that everything from plot structure to comic timing to crafting a fine sentence can be analysed, understood and learned. Once you do that, you see that it’s something you can do, and you give yourself the ability to learn it. You give yourself permission to become a skilled writer.

It’s less romantic than seeing writing as about inspiration and the inexplicable abilities of lone geniuses. But it’s more accurate, and above all more helpful.
